Custom 6105 Aluminum Extrusions & Profiles

Custom 6105 Aluminum Extrusions

6105 aluminum is a less common wrought alloy from the aluminum-magnesium-silicon family or 6000 series aluminum. The alloy is formed by extrusion, and it is usually found in heated form. 6105 aluminum is mainly composed of magnesium and silicon and can be used to make other wrought products.

6105 aluminum comes in two main temper designations: 6105-T1 and 6105-T5, with T-1 being the most ideal for bending. T1 is naturally aged, whereas T5 is artificially aged until it reaches the required mechanical properties. These aluminum alloys can be brazed or welded through numerous commercial methods and are compatible with various aluminum anodizing processes, including clear, clear and color, and hardcoat.

Learn more about the applications and chemical composition of 6105 aluminum, as well as how it compares to similar aluminum alloys.

6105 Aluminum vs. 6061 Aluminum

6105 aluminum and 6061 aluminum are very similar, except 6105 aluminum contains more silicon. Compared to 6061 aluminum, 6105 aluminum is more preferred especially for complex shapes because it extrudes easily and is less sensitive to quenching. When manufactured in T5 temper designation, 6105 aluminum offers a similar yield strength and tensile strength as 6061-T6 aluminum.

Applications of 6105 Aluminum

6105 aluminum has numerous industrial applications due to its good corrosion resistance and medium strength. It is best for applications requiring moderate strength or where there is less impact and overloading, including:

  • Ladders
  • Seamless structural tubing
  • Automotive connector stock
  • Handrail tubing

In addition, the experts at Tri-State Aluminum can provide anodizing finishing services to fit your 6105 aluminum extrusion. Anodized aluminum is less reactive, easier to dye, and offers exceptional corrosion resistance, increasing the value of 6105 aluminum extrusions provided by our company.

Chemical Composition of 6105 Aluminum

6105 aluminum is composed of the following elements:

  • Aluminum: 97.2 to 99.0%
  • Manganese: 0.1% max
  • Silicon: 0.6 to 1.0%
  • Titanium: 0.1% max
  • Chromium: 0.1% max
  • Copper: 0.1% max
  • Iron: 0.35% max
  • Magnesium: 0.45 to 0.8%
  • Zinc: 0.1% max
  • Residuals: 0.15% max

Here are the physical properties of 6105 aluminum:

  • Density: 2.69 g/cm³ (168 lb/ft³)
  • Yield strength: 120 to 260 MPa (17 to 38 ksi)
  • Ultimate tensile strength: 190 to 270 MPa (28 to 39 ksi)
  • Young’s modulus: 70 GPa (10 Msi)
  • Thermal expansion: 21.8 μm/m-K
  • Melting point: 599-649 °C (1110 to 1200 °F)
